If you’ve ever felt like having an adult beverage while working you’re probably not alone. And, it’s not unheard of for someone to show up intoxicated to their workplace. However, it’s a bit different when you’re a professional football player and it’s game day!

During a recent podcast, a former NFL player commented that he remembers a teammate showing up drunk for a game. You would expect the rest of the story to mention that said player would have had a terrible day, but that’s not what happened!

Jon Kitna, a former QB for the Bengals, recently appeared on the Ryen Russillo Podcast and chatted up old times. During the interview, Kitna talked about an unnamed player showing up late before the game and then going on to have a pretty good day!

“There was a time that I played a game with a guy that was drunk in the huddle. There was a time that a guy showed up late to a game. In the NFL, you need to be there two hours, two hours, and 15 minutes ahead of time. And he showed up under an hour before the game’s start. Those are weird things, now. That’s tough. I’m not sure if the staff knew. But I think the guy was like — that was kind of his normal. I mean he was drunk and had close to 200 yards receiving now. So it was crazy.”

Kitna played with the Bengals from 2001-2005 so there’s a good chance a bunch of internet detectives is already crunching game stats during that period looking for players that had near 200 yard days.

If you thought drinking before a game was unheard of, guess again!

Several NFL players have admitted to drinking before games. Clinton Portis, former back for the Washington and Denver Clinton Portis, said that he and some other teammates would regularly have a quick swallow “of Hennessy” before the start of a game.

The admission came during an interview with the Washington Post in 2017. Portis stated that he, Santana Moss, and the late Sean Taylor would boost their “adrenaline” before games.

“Not like going out and getting sloppy wasted. Just adrenaline,” Portis said in the interview. “You know, you take a shot and you were done with it. Me, Santana, and Sean, we did this for a year and a half before anybody knew. We never told anybody. It was just, hey, here’s a little sip, bam, that was it.”

It just stands to reason that Babe Ruth couldn’t be the only professional sports figure in history that would have a swallow, or several, before hitting the field.

Fantasy Football Players get a New Option for the Season – ‘Best Ball’ https://citizennewswire.com/2020/09/02/fantasy-football-players-get-a-new-option-for-the-season-best-ball/ Wed, 02 Sep 2020 16:39:25 +0000 http://citizennewswire.com/?p=1274 While it’s still a little unclear exactly how the NFL 2020 season will be with

While it’s still a little unclear exactly how the NFL 2020 season will be with COVID-19 still a big concern for players and fans, Fantasy Football will likely still help a lot of fans enjoy the games. Adding a new wrinkle to standard Fantasy play, online Fantasy game site FanDuel is rolling out a couple of new ways to play, including ‘Best Ball.’

So how exactly does this Best Ball version of fantasy football work?

Like current play, it begins with the draft. But in this version, players will draft 20 players for their fantasy team, and then keep that roster for the rest of the season.

There are no salary caps, trades or waiver claims to deal with.

Best Ball play works by adding up the scores of the best nine players of your team each week to give you a final score. That score is then compared to the other players in your league to determine a winner.

With a limited of 12 players in each league, the odds of winning a given week are increased. At the end of the season, the person with the highest overall score is the winner.

“Best Ball games are perfect for sports fans looking to play fantasy for the first time, or who love the season-long fantasy format,” said John Griffin, General Manager Fantasy, FanDuel Group.

Fans can enter on the website for as little as $1 according to the company.

The other new offer for fantasy players are daily Snake Draft contests. In addition to the NFL, these are also available for select NBA, NHL, golf and MLB games. These allow players to draft a team for each game and then the entries are pooled for that specific game.

Washington Set to Make Name Change with Temporary Solution https://citizennewswire.com/2020/07/26/washington-set-to-make-name-change-with-temporary-solution/ Sun, 26 Jul 2020 19:52:43 +0000 http://citizennewswire.com/?p=488 The Washington Redskins organization announced that their internal reviews have been completed and a name

The Washington Redskins organization announced that their internal reviews have been completed and a name change, after 87 years, for the NFL franchise is in the future. However, they have not decided on a permanent name yet but a temporary solution has been announced.

The franchise will now be known as “The Washington Football Team” according to an official release. The former logo and images will be replaced on official sites and across the organizations branding efforts starting immediately with hopes of having it completely done in a matter of a few months.

The temporary move allows the organization to use it’s existing color scheme to redesign uniforms and fan merchandise in time for the upcoming 2020 season. Player’s numbers will replace the old logo on their helmets.

Dan Snyder, has been under pressure to rename the team since he became the owner in 1999. That year the organization went to the Super Bowl and several thousand protestors showed up at the Championship game to push for change.

Protests of varying sizes have gone on ever since prompting Snyder to famously was quoted by USA Today as saying “put it in all caps” that he would never make change the team’s name. But, money talks!

In the last several months, several companies have announced that they would withhold money or stop doing business with the organization completely due to the Redskin name. The biggest being FedEx who pays for naming rights to the team’s home stadium.

Also, Amazon announced that “Redskin” branded fan items would be removed from its platform with other retailers such as Wal-Mart joining in. Retailers, we’re not the only ones applying pressure, as minority owners and shareholders joined the long list of vested parties looking for a name change.

The pressure has worked. The move came quickly once it was apparent that the team would be faced with huge financial losses. Only ten days passed from the time an “official review” was in the process to when news dropped that the Redskins name and logo would officially be retired.

Now we have to wait to see what the new name will be, or if they simply setting in as being known as Washington FT.

Tuesday, the “word” on sports-talk radio shows concerning the Tennessee Titans was that they were not going to be able to ink a long-term deal with running back Derrick Henry. What a difference a day makes! Henry and the Titans agreed on an extension Wednesday hours before signing deadlines.

It’s a four-year 50 million dollar contract that keeps the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner in the Music City.

The deal seems to be less than Henry was asking and more than the Titans wanted to pay according to some reports. That’s called negotiating. However, the money works out that the Titans can afford to retain both their running back and QB Ryan Tannehill.

Hopefully, both players will have the same type of season that helped a struggling Titans franchise rally into a stronger, often dominant, team.

Last season Tannehill had a 70.3 completion rate throwing for 2,742 yards and 22 touchdowns. Henry rushed for 1,540 yards averaging 5.1 yards per carry, with 16 rushing and 2 passing touchdowns.

If you don’t think running back numbers matter, consider this. Last season the Titans went 9-7 during the regular season and 2-1 in the playoffs. In every Titan loss (8), Henry was held to under 100 yards. Henry was over 100 yards in 8 of 11 wins.

During a Zoom interview posted on Tennesseetitans.com, Henry spoke on some speculating that the Titans saved money on his deal and that he may have signed for less than he could have.

“I just thought the deal made sense for me,” Henry said. “And if it gives us more room to bring in somebody else to help this team, I am all for it. Any time you can improve your team at positions that we need, it is always a big benefit. Hopefully, if my deal possibly did that – hopefully, we can bring somebody in that can help this team improve us more.”
