2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will Only be a Virtual Event https://citizennewswire.com/2020/09/17/2020-macys-thanksgiving-day-parade-will-only-be-a-virtual-event/ Thu, 17 Sep 2020 22:38:27 +0000 http://citizennewswire.com/?p=1474 After a complete shutdown, due to the pandemic, the City of New York is slowly

After a complete shutdown, due to the pandemic, the City of New York is slowly coming back to life. However, the usual crowds attending the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade don’t fit with the plan re-opening.

Because of this, the city has announced an alternative plan for this year’s parade.

New York City officials have been working closely with the team at Macy’s to develop a plan. For the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade they have two goals. Keep the public safe, and maintain the spectacle and wonder that is this holiday tradition.

This week the city unveiled its plans.

The parade itself with still go on with all of its signature floats, performers and of course, Santa Claus. However, this year’s parade will not be open to public attendance. It will instead only be available for viewing on television.

“Under the unique challenges of these unparalleled times, we felt it was important to continue this cherished holiday tradition that has been the opening act to the holiday season for generations of families,” said Susan Tercero, executive producer of Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. “While it will certainly look different in execution, this year’s Macy’s Parade celebration will once again serve its historical purpose – to bring joy into the hearts of millions across the nation.”

From 9am to 12 noon eastern on November 26, NBC will broadcast the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and stream it online.

The network anticipates a viewing audience in excess of 50 million.

This year marks the 94th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The history of the parade began with collection of Macy’s employees who took to the streets in 1924 dressed as clowns, playing instruments and adorning floats.

The spectacular has grown from there into an American holiday tradition.

Other Changes to the 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

To keep everyone in the parade safe, the Macy’s team has implemented some changes. These will operate in line with CDC guidelines, and local and state government protocols.

Part of this means that the parade with not follow its usual 2.5 mile route. Instead the event will be staged around the Herald Square area in Manhattan.

Participants in the parade will all wear masks and maintain social distancing protocols.

To reduce the number of participants this year, the Macy’s team will be utilizing specially designed vehicles to provide and anchor for the massive balloons. This is a task normally requiring up upwards of 100 people per balloon.

Amazon to Hire 3500 New Employees https://citizennewswire.com/2020/08/19/amazon-to-hire-3500-new-employees/ Wed, 19 Aug 2020 16:32:06 +0000 http://citizennewswire.com/?p=821 In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are buying products online rather than

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are buying products online rather than going to a store. It should come as little surprise then that online retail giant Amazon announced plans to hire thousands of workers. What is a little surprising, perhaps, is that the jobs are for work inside an office.

Currently, a substantial number of companies are, and have been, finding ways for their traditional office workers to get their jobs done from home.

With so many finding a way to make this process work, there has even been a lot of speculation as to how many of these workers will continue to work remotely once the pandemic has cleared.

So, it may seem a little unusual that Amazon is making plans to hire about 3500 people to work in its corporate offices in several cities across the U.S.

However, the company says that these new jobs are part of their plan to be ready to hit the ground running on expansion when people begin to return to the office environment.

“The ability to connect with people, the ability for teams to work together in an ad hoc fashion—you can do it virtually, but it isn’t as spontaneous,” explained Ardine Williams, the company’s Vice President of Workforce Development.

The new Amazon jobs will be in locations including New York, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Detroit, and Dallas. While some of the job postings are for immediate openings, the bulk of them will see new hires over a 2 year period.

In New York City, the company spent more than a billion dollars for another 900,000 square feet of office space in Manhattan.

Adding to the million plus workers the online giant currently has, the new positions will include departments such as Alexa, product management, engineering and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

It’s ‘Open Streets’ in New York City https://citizennewswire.com/2020/06/25/its-open-streets-in-new-york-city/ Thu, 25 Jun 2020 17:37:14 +0000 http://citizennewswire.com/?p=499 Governor Andrew Cuomo gave New York City restaurants the green light to have outdoor dining

Governor Andrew Cuomo gave New York City restaurants the green light to have outdoor dining as part of the city’s Phase 2 of reopening on June 22. Since outdoor dining has been suspended indefinitely, restaurants all over the city have been trying to accommodate customers as best they can.

According to New York magazine, restaurateurs must apply for a permit that allows them to expand out with regular sidewalk cafe regulations, as well as the use of curbs and adjacent parking lots. Owners are using all kinds of materials to create an outdoor dining exepriemce that is similar to their establishment’s aesthetics.

Although the use of flower pots and shipping pallets may seem less chic, New Yorkers are less concerned about the design, and are simply enjoying getting out of the house. A Curbed.com article claimed that the kitchy innovations are a new style of urban, “cottagecore.”

Mayor de Blasio announced that (in addition to sidewalks, patios, and curb lanes, and plazas) restaurants can utilize the 45 miles of city streets that are currently blocked off to cars during the weekdays between 8am and 8pm.

The “Open Streets Program” has changed the trajectory of both dining in New York City, as well as quality of life during the pandemic. Mayor Bill de Basio stated that the program not only offers the space for New Yorkers to dine, but also safe places for children to play.

“I have seen kids learning how to ride their bikes, people pulling their groceries in wagons down the street, people walking dogs, Revel lessons. The street is quieter than I’ve ever known it,” said Manhattan resident Melodie Bryant.

A study called “The Unrealized Potential of New York City’s Open Streets,” stated that in theory the program has potential, but has proved to be flawed.

“At present, the program remains a disconnected network of public space islands with management challenges,” said the study.  “While pocket parks and outdoor restaurants are helpful, they will not solve our transportation crisis or revive our economy.”
