Phase one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) included 23 films starting with Iron Man in 2008 and ending with Spider-Man: Far from Home in 2019. Only one of those films, Ant-Man and the Wasp, had a female superhero with top-billing.

Now the two smallest, or biggest depending on how you look at it, are returning for a third film under the Ant-Man umbrella. And, like the second film – the Wasp will get equal billing.

According to director Payton Reed, there is a “partnership” with the two heroes. In an interview with Yahoo Entertainment, Reed talks about the importance of the billing as well as the two stars – Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Evangeline Lilly (The Wasp).

“They’re a partnership, and she’s a very, very important part of that,” said Reed speaking about the characters as well as the actors. “And that was a very gratifying thing, I guess technically we were the first Marvel movie with a female hero in the title of the movie. Finding that balance in that movie, that’s very important to me because that’s very much a men’s playing field, historically. But that’s really, really changing now in a great way.”

The third installment of the Ant-Man series was first noted in 2018 with Reed signing on in 2019. Reed directed the first two films in the series. Other credits include the Yes Man with Jim Carrey and Bring it On – to name a few.

According to Lilly, during the interview, playing the Wasp has been exciting but she wanted to stay true to the original character. The actress points out that the comic book character was powerful and yet very feminine.

“She is very, very graceful in the comic books. She’s very feminine,” Lilly said. “She’s not a kind of legs apart, grounded, gritty [fighter]. She’s got pointed toes and long limbs and she’s very elegant. And I really wanted to hang onto that. Marvel is very good at modernizing their superheroes, but I always think you want to taste the original 1960s character.” IMDB current lists the movie as being in pre-production with no release date set.
