Since the COVID-19 pandemic virtually shut-down for most all retail outlets across the globe in March, many have struggled to recover. But some recent data is starting to point to a light at the end of the tunnel.

As U.S., and many parts of the world have started to recover and open back up, retail sales have started to gradually improve. According to the most recent number now in for July, it appears that the positive trend for retailers is continuing.

Sales numbers for retail continue their climb in the wake of the pandemic.

This is great news for the overall U.S. economy as retail is its largest private-sector employer responsible to about 52 million jobs in the country.

The data comes from the National Retail Federation. Based out of Washington, DC, they are the world’s largest retail trade association.

“Retail sales for July were another positive step in the right direction as our economy continues to slowly reopen,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said.

“Americans are showing their continued resilience and willingness to spend in the face of this unprecedented pandemic and government actions to date have clearly supported consumers and the economy in this process.”

Shay went on the say that a key to this continued recovery has been the move by the retailers to follow safety guidelines keeping their employees and customers safe.

By keeping everyone safe, customers are more comfortable returning to their usual shopping routines. To maintain the momentum, all experts agree that health safety is paramount.

Data from the U.S. Census Bureau showed just over a one percent increase for July compared to June – which saw over an eight percent increase from May.

Perhaps not a surprise, one of the biggest gains for retail came from tech, up nearly 23% from the previous month. With more people working from home, as well as online schooling, computer and other items for the home are leading the surge in retail.

Running a close second, again not a surprise given all the people at home, is a rise in sales for chains like The Home Depot and Lowes – seeing a 16% increase from last year.

Online retailers are expectedly seeing close to a 26% year-over-year increase in sales, and were up 0.7% from June to July.

Cloe behind are Grocery stores, seeing an annual uptick for just under 13%.
