In recent news, Major League Baseball (MLB) has announced their plan to bring back professional baseball to the people of America. Within the past month the MLB laid out their plan for return with the following schedule and rules. The “Spring Training” will begin on July 1, 2020 with the planned return of baseball on July 23, 2020 or July 24, 2020.

For quite a while the players association (union) was fighting against the owners of the teams for reasons such as players’ salaries and length of the season. Finally, the two sides appear to have come to an agreement.

While MLB will finally get started with the 2020 season, because of the spread of the corona-virus, this year’s baseball season will have some dramatic changes.

Normally the MLB has a 162-game regular season with two separate leagues or conferences, the National league and the American league. For the most part, teams within these leagues would play each other and rarely play someone from the opposite league.

Instead of 162 games, the 2020 season will consist of only 60.

The National league forces their pitchers to bat in the lineup, while the American league allows for designated hitters or an extra positional player to hit in place of the pitcher – a rule difference that had been under the microscope to see what would be best for the future of the league based on what the fans find to be more entertaining. Now, in this shortened season, there will be a universal designated hitter for all teams regardless of league.

There will be no spring training warm up, or extra practice and games prior to the start of the regular season this year.

Finally, to maintain social-distancing recommendations, players will sit apart from each other in the stands with no fans in attendance of course.

While it is exciting to see baseball return to the televisions of America, for many fans it may not feel like true baseball they have come to know and love.
