The COVID-19 corona-virus is clearly far from over. Recent data now shows that countries which had been thought virtually ‘Corona-free’ are now in danger of a second wave of virus.

Soon after being declared as a “Corona-free country,” New Zealand began reporting one case of the virus after another.

In the UK, Health experts have warned their government that a second wave appears imminent. With this in mind, many other countries are preparing themselves to battle another wave of COVID-19.

Experts cite the lack of implementation of safety protocols, lifting lock-down restrictions too far, and irresponsible behavior of individuals as leading to this situation.

“The evidence is the vast majority of people are still susceptible. In essence, if we lift all measures, we’re back to where we were in February,” said Dr. Mike Tildesley of the University of Warwick. Dr. Tildesley specializes in mathematical modelling of the spread of infectious diseases.

Pakistan is also one of the countries that are continuously reporting new corona cases across the globe. At the time of writing, more than 9 people died due to corona-virus in the previous 24 hours, pushing a total death toll to 6,162.

Beijing also reported a new outbreak of corona cases after thinking the pandemic was near an end in the area. In the middle-east, Iran is one of the most recent countries to announce expectations of a second wave of Corona-virus.

Corona-virus is often compared with the Spanish flu from history. That flu also had a resurgence, and the second wave of it was even more terrifying. Remembering that history, health experts are concerned about the impact of the next wave.

As governments prepare to battle the ‘second wave’ of COVID-19, the focus is complex. It is centered around controlling the spread, while minimizing disruption of daily activities.

In recent news, Major League Baseball (MLB) has announced their plan to bring back professional baseball to the people of America. Within the past month the MLB laid out their plan for return with the following schedule and rules. The “Spring Training” will begin on July 1, 2020 with the planned return of baseball on July 23, 2020 or July 24, 2020.

For quite a while the players association (union) was fighting against the owners of the teams for reasons such as players’ salaries and length of the season. Finally, the two sides appear to have come to an agreement.

While MLB will finally get started with the 2020 season, because of the spread of the corona-virus, this year’s baseball season will have some dramatic changes.

Normally the MLB has a 162-game regular season with two separate leagues or conferences, the National league and the American league. For the most part, teams within these leagues would play each other and rarely play someone from the opposite league.

Instead of 162 games, the 2020 season will consist of only 60.

The National league forces their pitchers to bat in the lineup, while the American league allows for designated hitters or an extra positional player to hit in place of the pitcher – a rule difference that had been under the microscope to see what would be best for the future of the league based on what the fans find to be more entertaining. Now, in this shortened season, there will be a universal designated hitter for all teams regardless of league.

There will be no spring training warm up, or extra practice and games prior to the start of the regular season this year.

Finally, to maintain social-distancing recommendations, players will sit apart from each other in the stands with no fans in attendance of course.

While it is exciting to see baseball return to the televisions of America, for many fans it may not feel like true baseball they have come to know and love.
