Fall is fast approaching and, in many areas, kids are already back in school. While many areas are opting for virtual learning as an option, due to COVID-19, most schools are also providing traditional face-to-face education.

When it comes to sending our children back to the classroom it seems, a growing majority of parents are favoring driving them in their car over using the traditional yellow school bus.

The new data comes from online car retailer Cars.com. The company recently released data that shows the growing trend.

In fact, says the company, the number of parents opting to drive their children is close to twice that of those choosing the school bus.

Jenni Newman, editor-in-chief for Cars.com wrote, “It’s not entirely surprising to see that parents want to drive their kids themselves. Americans have used their cars as a safe, reliable escape throughout the pandemic, and the value in personal car ownership will only increase as we continue to feel the impact of this crisis into the second half of the year.”

The numbers released show that just a little over half of parents will be driving their kids to school.

If you thought the car rider line was bad before, keep in mind that this is an over 20% increase over the way things were before COVID-19 – so plan accordingly.

The one saving grace for drivers, perhaps, is that for the time being, less than half of parents are letting their kids attend in person classes.

For the many families planning to band together to carpool, the CDC has some recommendations to help everyone stay safe.

Everyone should wear face coverings while in the vehicle. Remember to wipe down surfaces in the car both before and after the kids are on board.

Finally, says the agency, consider opening windows to help better ventilate the car when everyone is riding with you, especially if keeping your distance is less of an option.
