The PGA announced on Tuesday that the highest-ranked golfer in the world is withdrawing from this week’s CJ Cup PGA Tournament. Dustin Johnson started feeling some symptoms of the COVID-19 virus and was tested, as all players are according to PGA Tour protocols. Johnson’s test came back positive.

The CJ Cup event is normally part of the PGA Tour schedule known as the Asian Swing include the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges in South Korea, the Zozo Championship in Japan, and the WGC-HSBC Champions in China.

The CJ Cup and the Zozo Championship have been moved to Las Vegas and Sherman Oaks California, respectively, Due to COVID-19. The WGC-HBC Champions tournament has been canceled for the 2021 season – which the PGA Tour is already playing.

Johnson is currently ranked as the No. 1 player in the world by the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) followed by Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas. Johnson said he hopes to return soon as the reschedule Masters tournament is coming up in November.

“Obviously, I am very disappointed,” Johnson said in the PGA statement. “I was really looking forward to competing this week, but will do everything I can to return as quickly as possible. I have already had a few calls with the Tour’s medical team and appreciate all the support and guidance they have given me.”

Johnson finished out the 2020 season by winning the FedEx Cup and carding a T2 finish at the PGA Championship. He was T6 at the U.S. Open. That run of finishes sealed his OWGR No.1 ranking heading into the CJ Cup.

According to PGA officials, the withdrawal by Johnson opens up the door for a player waiting on the CJ Cup field alternative list. The golfer filling the spot in the select limited field event with no cut will be J.T. Poston who is currently ranked No. 61 by the OWGR. Poston finished third at the Sanderson Farms Championship a few weeks ago but missed the cut at the U.S. Open.

Last weekend Dustin Johnson walked away with his twenty-second PGA Tour victory with his lowest score yet. He won the tournament with an amazingly low thirty under par in the Northern Trust tournament.

Johnson’s was one of the lowest scores ever recorded for a tournament in the history of the PGA Tour. Some players have yet to reach thirty birdies in their career or lifetime, I know I haven’t yet.

His thirty under beat the next closest competitor by an impressive eleven strokes.

Johnson was fighting for multiple records all week, but came up short. In the end his competition was truly not even close. Johnson was playing on a whole other level!

With this victory Dustin Johnson has reclaimed his title as number one ranked golfer in the world – edging out Rory Mcilroy for the number one spot with his recent performance.

It is truly amazing to watch Dustin Johnson play whenever his game is in full swing.

Fellow PGA competitor Kevin Kisner said, “I’ve been watching it for 25 years. I’m pretty accustomed to it. When he’s on, I just step to the side and try to add to my bank account.” Whenever you leave professional golfers with that impression, you deserve the number one ranked spot.

Despite his current ranking and stellar performance last weekend, as Brooks Koepka mentioned, Dustin Johnson had previously won only one major championship.

That win occurred at the 2016 U.S. Open at the Oakmont Country Club where Johnson won with a score of four under par.

This highlights the score and level of difficulty difference between a major championship and any other tournament. It will be exciting to watch and see if he can continue to play at this high of a level, and to see how many more events he can win along the way.

The PGA Tour recently returned to the sports world with the RBC Heritage Tournament which was held in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina at the classic Harbour Town Golf Links. This is an annually held tournament on the PGA Tour with a par of seventy-one and an overall purse of 7.1 million dollars, no small change.

Going into the tournament all eyes, and bets, were on Rory Mcilroy, Justin Thomas, and Bryson DeChambeau to walk away with the title of tournament champion for this year. However, one surprising competitor rose to the challenge and came away with the victory and a new course record.

Webb Simpson was crowned the champion of the RBC Heritage this year with the score of twenty-two under par. This score beats the previous course record by two strokes. Webb Simpson is not a well-known golfer, but has been playing on the PGA Tour for twelve years.

This victory was his second of the season, but only his seventh within the span of his professional career. Although he ranks 87th in driving distance on the Tour, he is 1st in birdie average per round with 4.97. This just goes to prove the age old saying, “Drive for show and putt for dough.”

The PGA Tour has led the sports world in their return to play from this COVID-19 pandemic and proved to all that sports can be brought back safely. Although fans have been removed from the events, they are doing an excellent job of televising the action for all the viewers at home.

The Tour will continue this week with both a charity match and the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Course in Dublin, Ohio.
