An ever-increasing number of online shoppers turn to Amazon for the convenience and competitive pricing. Not surprisingly, a recent study, comparing the top online and in-store retailer in the U.S., showed that Amazon provides the lowest prices and best shopping deals.

The results come from an annual ‘Price Wars’ study by a company called Profitero. This was the fourth year that the study has been performed.

As part of the study, a comprehensive analysis is performed which compares prices on over 18,400 consumer products. These fall into 21 categories most often bought by consumers.

The list of product categories included household supplies, health and personal care, office supplies, home furniture, electronics, appliances and others.

The study looks at the prices of those items across a number of major retailers. Both online and brick-and-mortar, the retailers were Amazon, Walmart, Target, Staples, Home Depot, Wayfair, Macy’s, Walgreen’s, CVS, Kroger, Nordstrom, Best Buy, Lowes, and Chewy.

According to the study, “Amazon offered customers the lowest prices most often and most consistently.”

While the complete results of the study can be found on Profitero’s web site, here are some of the highlights:

Consistently, Amazon was found to offer the lowest priced option in all categories. At the top of the list for savings was Home Furniture. In this category, Amazon was 35% more affordable than other retailers. Not far behind, Vitamins and Supplements were on average 34% cheaper.

These were followed closely by Health and Personal Care and Beauty products. Consumers would save 26% and 22% respectively by shopping for these items on Amazon versus the other retailers.

Former DEA Agent James Kuykendall issued a statement through his lawyer saying that the characterization of him in Amazon Prime’s new series The Last Narc is completely inaccurate.

Released earlier in 2020, The Last Narc focuses on the 1985 murder of U.S. DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. According to the series, Camarena’s death was the result of a government conspiracy that included the decorated federal agent, Jaime Kuykendall.

“Mr. Kuykendall dedicated his life to law enforcement and was, at all times, unequivocally loyal to his country and to his fellow agents,” said Kuykendall’s lawyer, Greg Gutzler.

“Amazon and other sources have besmirched Mr. Kuykendall’s character and denigrated his record of service to our country.”

In his formal statement, Kuykendall said “The Amazon ‘documentary’ series, The Last Narc, is riddled with fiction that is camouflaged as ‘fact’. To catch eyeballs, and in knowing disregard of the truth, the Amazon producers falsely painted me as corrupt.

James Kuykendall’s Statement to the Press

“That insinuation is patently false – I have always been loyal and faithful in my duties and to my colleagues. The producers were provided ample opportunity to sufficiently research and vet many of the assertions made in the show, yet they preferred sensational conspiracy theories and relied on unreliable witnesses to paint a picture of the events surrounding Enrique Camarena’s death and the subsequent investigations and trials. As a result, Amazon released an inaccurate documentary series, which they put forth as the truth.

By doing so, The Last Narc and related publications, which continue to crop up, ultimately harm the reputation of honest men, tarnish the legacy of Enrique Camarena, and falsely paint a picture of incompetence—and even corruption—among the law enforcement professionals who put their lives on the line to conduct investigations into the murder of their friend and colleague. This brazen disregard for the truth is both harmful to my reputation and causes undue emotional distress for Mr. Camarena’s family and friends.

“My former DEA colleagues, as well as law enforcement officers and many others who knew me and Mr. Camarena during the time of the events examined in The Last Narc and related publications, were, and continue to be shocked by the lack of diligence or care with which the publishers, producers, and participants in the documentary have spun and misrepresented the facts.

“The accusations of corruption against me are patently false. Prior to the publication of the documentary:

  • I specifically discussed elements of the proposed show with producers;
  • gave them facts to set the record straight; and
  • urged them to be diligent in their search for the truth and in their portrayal of the facts.

“The producers, however, disregarded these conversations and information and instead produced a documentary putting forth falsehoods as fact and harming me and others in the process.

“I will defend my reputation and honor, and the facts will prove that truth. I have retained legal counsel and intend to pursue justice for myself and my fellow agents and their families.”

A primary focus of the donations is charities that will be lending a hand to all of those in communities that have been hard hit by all of the natural disasters and other issues this year.

Amazon will provide the funding and donations to over a thousand charities in this global effort. This includes organizations in the U.S., U.K., Spain, Singapore, Japan, Italy, India, Germany, France, China, Canada, and Australia.

A number of celebrities are working with Amazon to help promote the effort to help those in the greatest of need. Gabrielle Union, Toronto Maple Leafs player Mitch Marner, and Singaporean actor and musician, Nathan Hartono are some of the first to lend their names to the cause.

“Charitable organizations around the world serve a vital role in their communities, and they’re facing new challenges—often with fewer resources—as we all continue to fight through a global pandemic,” said Jeff Wilke, CEO Worldwide Consumer.

“Amazon is proud to support over one thousand organizations by donating millions of the items they need to help their communities and, hopefully, deliver much-needed smiles along the way.”

How You Can Help through AmazonSmile and Alexa

At smile.amazon.com you can access AmazonSmile. Simply select your favorite charity from the list of over one million and shop on Amazon as usual. By doing this, .5 percent of your purchase will automatically be donated to your charity.

If you happen to have an Amazon Alexa in your house, you can also say “Alexa, I want to make a donation.” This will allow you to make a cash donation to the charity of your choice.

Alexa can also help you make a toy donation to Toys for Tots. Just say, “Alexa, donate to Toys for Tots.” When you do this, as an added bonus, Amazon will match all toy donations with a toy-for toy match.

Thousands of new unemployment claims are being filed ever day across the U.S. Fortunately, this week, Amazon announced roughly 100,000 new jobs at locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

While the pandemic has had a devastating impact on most in-person retail, it has been something of a boom for online retailers. People still need to buy things. As such, many are turning to online retailers like Amazon to get what they need.

The online giant says that it plans to open 100 new facilities this month. These locations along with other of the newest facilities are where the new jobs will be located.

All of these locations, and more, are needed to support the fulfillment of and delivery of the growing number of orders.

There will be a mix of full-time and part-time Amazon jobs related to this announcement.

The jobs announced today, are in addition to approximately 33,000 corporate jobs that we wrote about in a related Amazon article.

Why work for Amazon?

Amazon jobs are becoming more and more sought-after as a quality blue-collar job.

In addition to starting pay of $15 per hour or more, the positions include benefits. Full-time Amazon employees receive health, vision and dental insurance. The company provides a 50% match on 401(k) contributions.

20 weeks of paid parental leave is a somewhat unique benefit that the company also offers. While most companies offer paid leave for mother’s after the birth of a child, providing leave for the new father is rare.

Locations of new Amazon Jobs

The new facilities and jobs announced this week follow on to substantial growth already seen this year. In the first half of 2020, Amazon opened 75 new facilities supporting their distribution network.

Today’s announcement, highlighted jobs in: Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The company says that it is actively hiring for the new positions. Anyone interested in finding out more or applying can do so at: amazon.com/apply.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are buying products online rather than going to a store. It should come as little surprise then that online retail giant Amazon announced plans to hire thousands of workers. What is a little surprising, perhaps, is that the jobs are for work inside an office.

Currently, a substantial number of companies are, and have been, finding ways for their traditional office workers to get their jobs done from home.

With so many finding a way to make this process work, there has even been a lot of speculation as to how many of these workers will continue to work remotely once the pandemic has cleared.

So, it may seem a little unusual that Amazon is making plans to hire about 3500 people to work in its corporate offices in several cities across the U.S.

However, the company says that these new jobs are part of their plan to be ready to hit the ground running on expansion when people begin to return to the office environment.

“The ability to connect with people, the ability for teams to work together in an ad hoc fashion—you can do it virtually, but it isn’t as spontaneous,” explained Ardine Williams, the company’s Vice President of Workforce Development.

The new Amazon jobs will be in locations including New York, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Detroit, and Dallas. While some of the job postings are for immediate openings, the bulk of them will see new hires over a 2 year period.

In New York City, the company spent more than a billion dollars for another 900,000 square feet of office space in Manhattan.

Adding to the million plus workers the online giant currently has, the new positions will include departments such as Alexa, product management, engineering and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

If you are a fan of baseball-related movies the phrase “there’s no crying in baseball” may ring a bell. Tom Hanks uttered the line in the 1992 movie A League of Their Own and it’s been a subject of memes and satire ever since.

Now the 1992 Penny Marshal directed film has been greenlighted as source material for a new Amazon Series according to Joe Otterson of Variety. But, don’t expect a remake of the original movie which starred Geena Davis, Madonna, Rosie O’Donnell, Lori Petty, and Jon Lovitz along with Hanks.

The series creators, Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham are going with new storylines about other players fighting for positions in the women’s baseball league. Jacobson will also star in the series

This is not the first attempt at a TV version of the movie. The film was adapted to TV in 1993 for CBS for one season with one of six filmed episodes never being aired. The remake picked up where the original movie left off with new actors being cast for a majority of the characters.

Vernon Sanders, co-head of television for Amazon Studios, stated that the series will be an expanded look on the stories behind the original film.

“Will and Abbi have taken a classic movie, reimagining it for a new generation with new characters and their own fresh, modern vision on a timeless story of big dreams, friendship, love, and, of course, baseball.”

The original movie revised interest in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) which began operations in1943 during WWII. The league was started by Phillip K. Wrigley and other MLB owners as a way to help keep professional baseball going while so many players had joined the military.

The AAGPBL ran until 1954 with fifteen teams overall including a fictionalized version of the Rockford Peaches which was the team the Marshal film focused on.

The Washington Redskins organization announced that their internal reviews have been completed and a name change, after 87 years, for the NFL franchise is in the future. However, they have not decided on a permanent name yet but a temporary solution has been announced.

The franchise will now be known as “The Washington Football Team” according to an official release. The former logo and images will be replaced on official sites and across the organizations branding efforts starting immediately with hopes of having it completely done in a matter of a few months.

The temporary move allows the organization to use it’s existing color scheme to redesign uniforms and fan merchandise in time for the upcoming 2020 season. Player’s numbers will replace the old logo on their helmets.

Dan Snyder, has been under pressure to rename the team since he became the owner in 1999. That year the organization went to the Super Bowl and several thousand protestors showed up at the Championship game to push for change.

Protests of varying sizes have gone on ever since prompting Snyder to famously was quoted by USA Today as saying “put it in all caps” that he would never make change the team’s name. But, money talks!

In the last several months, several companies have announced that they would withhold money or stop doing business with the organization completely due to the Redskin name. The biggest being FedEx who pays for naming rights to the team’s home stadium.

Also, Amazon announced that “Redskin” branded fan items would be removed from its platform with other retailers such as Wal-Mart joining in. Retailers, we’re not the only ones applying pressure, as minority owners and shareholders joined the long list of vested parties looking for a name change.

The pressure has worked. The move came quickly once it was apparent that the team would be faced with huge financial losses. Only ten days passed from the time an “official review” was in the process to when news dropped that the Redskins name and logo would officially be retired.

Now we have to wait to see what the new name will be, or if they simply setting in as being known as Washington FT.
