This morning, the trial started with opening statements from the prosecution as well as the defense attorneys representing officer Chauvin.

Both opening arguments concluded just before noon eastern time this morning. After a 20-minute recess, the trial has resumed with the first of what will be a long list of witness testimony.

In its opening statement, the prosecution focused on the fact that officer Chauvin did not “get up” or “let up” after kneeling on the neck of George Floyd for nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds. It is their contention that this is what caused the death of Mr. Floyd.

The defense, meanwhile, is trying to show that Mr. Floyd died as a result of a heart condition complicated by the ingestion of narcotics and the stress of the situation.

The trial is expected to continue for some time. The major news networks, including HLN and CNN, are broadcasting the live trial coverage continuously while also providing a live stream of the trial online.

The word femicide, understood as perpetuated violence against a woman by a man, was first spread by sociologist, activist and criminologist Diane Russell in 1992 in her famous book “Femicide: The Politics of a woman killing”.

2020 will be remembered as the year of the pandemic due to Covid-19 and the year in which the population was forced to remain closed within the four walls of their houses, recording another terrible fact: the increase in femicides.

Many women, forced to remain segregated in their home during the lockdown, were killed or suffered physical and psychological abuse.

To get a better idea, here are some statistics.

During the first six months of 2020, murderers of women accounted for 45% of the total of all murders, reaching as much as 50% in spring 2020.

One woman every three days was killed inside the house in the first ten months of 2020, for a total of 91 femicides in Italy, this number is scary and should make you think.

Women and children are the weakest victims and their confinement at home, without being able to go out and ask for help, was one of the main causes that led to the increase in these terrible killings.

Most of the victims were killed within the family or by a partner or ex-partner, 21 out of 26 women killed, lived with their own executioner.

Home, the place considered to be the safest, has become a trap with no escape route for many women, who often, due to family pressures, have preferred or have been forced not to file a complaint.

Violence against women is rooted in time and in patriarchal culture all over the world and killing a woman “only” because she is a woman is a mindset difficult to unhinge.

Why does man kill or violate a woman?

Sociological research has shown that the cause is to be found in the fear for men,of losing their power, the fear that women become too autonomous, independent and they can no longer control them. Acts of violence come from men from all social classes, with no particular difference between educational levels and family backgrounds.

Most of the men claim that they killed for LOVE , but if you love someone, you must know how to give up and accept the independence and happiness of the other person.

“The allegation of a $2 billion tax fraud is the largest ever tax charge against an individual in the United States,” David L. Anderson, the U.S. attorney for the Northern District of California, said at a news conference.

The 79 year-old Brockman was indicted by a federal grand jury late last week. Among the 39 charges levied by prosecutors are, including tax fraud, wire fraud, evidence tampering and money laundering.

Prosecutors allege that Brockman’s criminal actions started in 1999. It was then that they say be started to move money into overseas accounts and “covering his tracks” as he did so.

A former Marine, Brockman worked at Ford and IBM before starting his own company, Universal Computer Systems. About 30 years later, in 2006, his company was acquired by Reynolds and Reynolds – keeping Brockman as Chief Executive.  

In a statement to the New York Times the company said that it “is not alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing, and we are confident in the integrity and strength of our business.” They went on to say that what Brockman did occurred “outside of his professional responsibilities.”

Over the last 2 decades, Brockman allegedly developed and used a network of entities in Bermuda and Nevis to income from the government, and hid other untaxed profits in banks in Bermuda and Switzerland.

Along with Brockman, Robert F. Smith is listed as a co-conspirator. Smith, a 57-year-old billionaire, fell into the spotlight in in 2019. In May of that year, he pledged to pay off all the student loans for the graduating class of Morehouse College, an all-male, historically Black college in Atlanta.

Smith is the founder of a private equity fund – Vista Equity Partners. However, the firm had only one investor – Robert T. Brockman.

Prosecutors say that Smith helped Brockman hide his profits earned through Vista in offshore accounts so he could avoid paying taxes.

Robert Smith made a deal with prosecutors to testify against Brockman. In exchange, Smith will avoid prosecution while admitting to his part in the scheme. He will however, have to pay $140 million in taxes and penalties for the $43 million in federal taxes he evaded from 2005 to 2014.

Brockman is currently out on a $1M bond after pleading not guilty on the charges.

Chairman of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, Publicity Committee, Akintunde Akinsemola, spoke to a reporter from The PUNCH about the incident recently.  Akinsemola said Sodje’s  body was found on September 1.

The remains were located in a forest area situated at Idoani, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria.

According to reports, Sodje’s brother had been kidnapped a few days before. He was on his way to meet with the kidnappers and pay them a ransom.

Unfortunately, as often happens, the kidnappers had no intention of returning Sodji’s bother, and instead killed him.

The incident highlights the continued issue of kidnapping in a large number of countries around the world. In many areas this is still used by criminals as a way to make money – often with deadly consequences.

According to a report from theglobaleconomy.com, in 2017 there were an average of 1.8 kidnappings per 100,000 people across the globe. The countries with the highest rates were Belgium and Canada – tied at 10.3 kidnappings per 100,000 people.

“His wife Flora and friends rallied round to raise the ransom. Then his elder brother, Paul, and a friend took the ransom to them, yet the Fulani men murdered the two of them. Chris has not been found and the kidnappers have stopped communicating with the family”.

While searching for some of their own relatives who had been kidnapped, several Idoani elders came across the bodies of Sodji and his friend.

In 2012, Sodje led the national Nigeria Scrabble team to the African Scrabble Championship in Zambia.

To pay tribute and honor the memory of their former leader, scrabble federation held a virtual posthumous birthday for Sodje who would have turned 55 this week.

“We keep mourning, he was to celebrate his 55th birthday today (Wednesday), which would have been a great landmark for him but his life was nipped in the bud”, said NSF President, Sulaiman Gora.
