Bordeaux is well known for its structured, age-worthy red wines, made with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with few other varieties as supporting actors, including Petit Verdot and the rarer Malbec and Carménère.

Although Bordeaux may not want to change its ways, global warming is real, and that means adapting or death. With increasing temperatures during the grapes’ growing season, the future does not look bright for Bordeaux producers.

Early January 2021, the INAO, the department in charge of French wine’s quality, finally authorized a set of new grapes for Bordeaux: Arinarnoa, Castets, Marselan and Touriga Nacional. Two white grapes were included as well, Alvarinho and Liliorila.

While this may not sound like much to the average person, this is a very big deal. For wine purists, this is like saying Italians will now make pizza with apple puree instead of tomato sauce. What does this mean for Bordeaux wines? It means survival trumps tradition, and that climate change affects us in more ways than we thought.

Wine books will have to be rewritten, and wine lovers will need to reassess their knowledge about classic wine regions and their grapes, starting with Bordeaux.

This might just be the beginning of an exclusive collection of spirits. The release of Sandringham Gin, made from the aromatics found in Her Majesty’s winter home, the Sandringham Palace, will evoke memories of Sharon fruit, Chinese Persimmon myrtle.

These are small-batch, limited productions and are, as of today, only available in the UK from the Royal Collection Shop. Hopefully, a few bottles will drip down to international markets soon.

With America, Spain, France, and Italy experiencing second-wave coronavirus outbreaks, it seems this won’t be a Merry Christmas in the Yucatan peninsula. August saw 20% hotel bookings, and it has risen to 25% in the past months.

This is not so bad considering authorities allow only 30% occupation to comply with health measures and appropriate social distancing. It’s worth mentioning that half the occupation came from Mexican visitors.

There are 1,130 hotels in the Riviera Maya with over 100,000 rooms. 144,000 warm, friendly local people working in the region’s tourism industry are waiting for you with open arms.

This might not be the best moment for traveling abroad. But then again, who doesn’t need to bury their feet in the white sand and enjoy a Pina Colada under the sun?

Things won’t get better in the Riviera Maya until we ourselves make it better. And there’s more. Visiting the region right now has an upside – you’ll get the entire beach for yourself.
