The nominations for the 78th Golden Globes were announced virtually on February 3rd, 2021 and garnered a large amount of criticism due to their dismal rankings of various films and TV series showcasing minority voices.

Most notably, “Emily in Paris” was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Television Series, snubbing “I May Destroy You.” This was a decision that even certain writers of “Emily in Paris” were surprised with, stating that the Michaela Coel’s groundbreaking series was deserving of a nomination as well.

Another example is that of the critically acclaimed film “Minari,” which has already achieved buzz and won various awards, including one at the Sundance Film Festival.

“Minari” depicts the struggles of an immigrant family in America and is directed by American Lee Isaac Chung. Despite this, the film was not nominated for Best Motion Picture, but rather nominated as Best Foreign Motion Picture.

Critics claim that this invalidates the experience of countless American families with similar stories. In the case of “Minari,” the Golden Globes state that a film must have dialogue consisting of over 50% to be considered for best pic.

However, this rule was not enforced on Quentin Tarantino’s WWII film, “Inglorious Bastards,” which is estimated to use only about 30% English and received various Golden Globe nominations in 2010.

The Golden Globes will be broadcasted on February 28th from 8-11 pm EST on NBC. The event will be hosted for a fourth time by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

While some countries are returning to strict COVID-19 lockdown policies, other nations are loosening restrictions. The result are areas being referred to as Travel Bubbles – good news for the tourism industry.

As an apparent second-wave of coronavirus cases emerged, many countries prepared to enact new lock-downs. The resurgence of these lock-downs, such as those in France, have resulted in a mass exodus. Many residents are racing to flee before the new lock-downs were implemented.

In other countries, where cases of the coronavirus are lower, an increasing amount of travel bubbles are emerging.  Also known as corona corridors, these are exclusive partnerships between friendly or neighboring countries. They allow for tourism industries, and in-person business meetings, to continue even in the face of COVID-19.

Most recently, Japan and South Korea reached an agreement allowing short-term visitors. Individuals completing business trips, for example, are allowed to enter and leave each respective country without undergoing the mandatory two-week quarantine period.

However, in the case of long-term visitors, the quarantine is still required. Japan also has previous travel agreements with nine other Asian counties.

In Hawaii, the island state recently struck a deal with United Airlines removing the two-week quarantine requirement for tourists visiting on holiday. This waiver is only for airline passengers who passed rapid COVID-19 tests, provided by the airline, at their departure airport. The airline plans to expand the testing for passenger to other destinations, including Europe, very soon.

Other nations, such as Singapore, have spread their reach to countries such as New Zealand.

It is currently uncertain how the recent spike in global cases, especially those in parts of Europe, will affect the continuation of these travel bubble policies.

However, their existence and increasing popularity provide hope to many. This includes both those who are itching to explore new places, as well as the severely impacted travel industry looking to restore lost revenue.

Samsung, the global South Korean conglomerate best known for their electronic products utilized all across the world, lost their chairman Lee Kun-hee on Sunday, October 25th when he died at the age of 78.

Lee Kun-hee was the third son of the original founder, Lee Byung-chol, who founded the company in 1938. When Lee Kun-hee took over the company, he revolutionized the perception of Samsung.

The company shifted from a producer of cheap electronic products to a global superpower due to his radical reforms. In 2019, Samsung took the lead in the smartphone market with a 21.8% share with 298 million units sold. Huawei and Apple were second and third with 17.6% and 14.5% respectively.

Lee Kun-hee’s life has been defined by overwhelming successes, as well as controversies of various natures. Following a charge of tax evasion and embezzlement in 2008, he stepped down as the chairman of Samsung, only to return to the position in 2010.

His jail sentence ended in a presidential pardon. What’s more, he later went on to spearhead South Korea’s bid to host the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Due to rapidly declining health in recent years, Lee was no longer in an active position of power at Samsung. However, his passing calls into question the division of his numerous Samsung shares.

The changes —if any— to the conglomerate’s structure are still up in the air.

Regardless of whether or not Lee Kun-hee’s death will seriously impact the company, his passing was undoubtedly a great loss.

For many, Thanksgiving is a time of celebration and food spent with extended family. In normal circumstances, family members travel from far and wide to reconvene with their loved ones – enjoying a thanksgiving turkey dinner.

However, due to the travel restrictions and fear of transmission that comes hand in hand with the COVID-19 pandemic, many people are anticipating a much smaller, more intimate Thanksgiving season this year.

This is potentially debilitating for a variety of different Thanksgiving-related industries and companies, especially turkey farmers. The United States is home to about 2500 turkey farms. For many of them, the holiday months represent close to half of their annual sales.

With gathering sizes reduced, many farmers fear that the demand for smaller, personal-sized turkeys will surmount their available stock and leave them with a surplus of larger birds.

A typical male turkey weighs about 20 pounds, while the females are around 16. Farmers had committed to the percentage of each that they would grow long before COVID-19 hit. So, now all they can do is hope for the best.

COVID-related cancellations of state fairs and other events, where turkey legs are a popular food item, have already impacted turkey sales greatly. The closure of universities and schools also resulted in a greatly reduced demand for turkey breast meat.

Going forward to the holiday season, there’s no way of knowing just how severely the industry will be impacted. For many turkey farmers, all they can do is watch and wait.
